One Night Isn’t Enough… But It’s Where Change Begins

One Night Isn’t Enough… But It’s Where Change Begins
On any given night in Victoria, more than 7,600 young people experience homelessness. It’s a number that’s confronting, but what sits behind it is even more powerful — real lives, real stories, and young people navigating circumstances they never chose.
Youth homelessness is not a result of poor decisions or lack of effort. It is most often the direct outcome of trauma, family violence, and instability. In fact, four in five young people experiencing homelessness have been impacted by family violence, more than half have presented to emergency departments for mental health concerns, and half of all adults facing long-term homelessness first experienced it in their teenage years. These are not isolated situations — they are patterns, and they tell a story of vulnerability that begins far too early.
When you really stop and think about it, “home” is something most of us move through life assuming will always be there. It’s the place we reset, feel safe, and gather strength for what comes next. For thousands of young people, that foundation simply doesn’t exist. Instead, they are left to navigate uncertainty, instability, and survival at an age where they should be building confidence, education, and a future.
Why This Matters to Me
This year marks my 13th year as an Ambassador for Melbourne City Mission’s Sleep At The ‘G, and each year, the reason I show up becomes even clearer.
This isn’t about spending one uncomfortable night. It’s about standing in recognition of a much bigger reality and using that moment to create awareness, raise critical funds, and contribute to meaningful, lasting change. Melbourne City Mission provides not only immediate support but also long-term solutions — stable housing, education pathways, mental health support, and the wrap-around services that give young people a genuine opportunity to rebuild their lives.
What continues to drive me is the understanding that early intervention changes everything. When young people are supported at the right time, the trajectory of their entire future can shift. Without that support, the cycle continues.
Why Your Support Matters
Real change is never created by one person alone. It happens when individuals, families, businesses, and communities come together and decide that this is something worth standing for.
Your support has a direct and tangible impact. It contributes to safe accommodation, access to essential services, and the kind of consistent, structured support that helps young people move out of crisis and into stability. It helps replace uncertainty with opportunity.
And while one night at the MCG is symbolic, what it represents is far greater — it is a collective statement that youth homelessness is not something we are willing to ignore.
A Personal Ask
If you’ve taken the time to read this, I want to ask you to pause for a moment and consider the role you can play.
Not in a distant or abstract way, but in a real, immediate sense.
Because the truth is, change doesn’t come from awareness alone. It comes from action.
A donation — regardless of the amount — is not just a financial contribution. It is a direct investment in a young person’s safety, stability, and future. It is the difference between uncertainty and support, between crisis and the opportunity to rebuild.
If you’re in a position to give, I encourage you to do so. If you’re able to go one step further, consider registering to take part in Sleep At The ‘G yourself. And if nothing else, sharing this message helps ensure that more people understand the reality of what so many young Australians are facing.
Join Me
On May 14, I will be at the MCG, not out of comfort, but out of commitment.
A commitment to stand alongside young people who deserve better.
A commitment to be part of a solution that creates real pathways forward.
And a commitment to continue showing up, year after year, until change is no longer needed.
I would genuinely love for you to stand with me.

We Have The Power To End Youth Homelessness
Every night, over 122,000 Australians experience homelessness. That’s more than the maximum capacity of the great MCG. And alarmingly, a quarter of all these people are between the ages of 12 and 24.
In Victoria, more than 7,600 young people experience homelessness every night.
Young people need more than a safe place to live, they need stability and support to develop life skills, heal from trauma, and to transition to independence. Your support is needed now more than ever.
Homelessness is not a choice. Homelessness doesn't discriminate.
I'm seeking your support by asking you to donate so that I can reach my fundraising target. Every dollar counts!
Together, we have the power to end youth homelessness.
