Youth Homeless Snapshot
MCM's Victorian Youth Homelessness Snapshot is a census of the 177 children and young people aged 15-24 who were homeless on 27 February 2024 and connected to MCM, Victoria’s largest youth homelessness provider, and its statewide youth homelessness service, Frontyard Youth Services.
This is just a small glimpse into what is happening across Victoria every single night.
4 in 5 young people grew up experiencing family violence
Of those young people, 54% were known to child protection.
Youth homelessness is not a choice. Youth homelessness is a result of disadvantage leading to a crisis – like family violence, abuse and mental health.
2 in 3 young people had been experiencing homelessness for at least 2 years
Couch surfing is the most common form of homelessness experienced by young people.
But because it happens behind closed doors, most people don't see it.
This keeps youth homelessness invisible.
45% had attended an emergency department for mental health concerns
A staggering 64% of those young people were discharged from hospital into homelessness.
Additionally, 55% of all young people recorded had reported self-harm, suicidal ideation or attemps to take their own life.
Youth and adult homelessness are linked
Half of all adults experiencing long-term homelessness first became homeless in their teens.
By supporting young people early, we can help them avoid staying homeless for life. Early intervention is critical.
