2023 MAY 10: Sleep at G: A Night of Solidarity and Reflection

On the chilly evening of MAY 10, 2023, amidst the iconic walls of Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), an extraordinary event unfolded – Sleep at G. Joined by my dedicated colleagues from IDP Education, I became a part of something truly remarkable, as close to 1600 individuals from diverse walks of life gathered with a shared purpose: to make a tangible difference in the lives of homeless youth in Victoria.

From the moment we arrived, it was evident that Sleep at G was more than just a charity event; it was a profound experience designed to shed light on the harsh realities faced by those without a place to call home. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation and empathy as we prepared ourselves for a night of solidarity and reflection.

As we mingled with fellow attendees, exchanging stories and laughter, it became apparent that this event was about more than just raising funds – it was about fostering a sense of community and understanding. Each person present, whether a corporate leader, a student, or a community member, shared a common goal: to elevate the lives of those less fortunate.

The organizers had meticulously arranged every aspect of the event, ensuring that participants had a genuine glimpse into the lives of homeless youth. The highlight of the evening was the opportunity to experience firsthand what it means to sleep rough. Armed with nothing more than cardboard boxes – aptly named "the big box" – we settled down on the cold, hard ground, humbled by the realization of the luxuries we often take for granted.

Throughout the night, amidst the chill of the Melbourne air, there were moments of warmth and camaraderie. Fun-filled activities like costume dressing added levity to the evening, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, there is room for joy and connection. As we shared a simple dinner and breakfast, served with humility and gratitude, it served as a poignant reminder of the basic necessities many in our community lack.

As the night drew to a close and the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, we departed from MCG with hearts full of pride and humility. Our experience at Sleep at G had been transformative, deepening our understanding of the challenges faced by homeless youth and reaffirming our commitment to making a difference.

For us at IDP Education, participation in Sleep at G wasn't just a corporate responsibility – it was a reflection of our core values and ethos. As advocates for education and empowerment, we recognize the pivotal role we play in shaping a brighter future for all members of our community, regardless of their circumstances.

In the end, Sleep at G was more than just a charity event – it was a powerful testament to the strength of collective action and the capacity for empathy to drive meaningful change. As we carry the memories of that cold March night with us, let us continue to strive towards a world where every individual has a place to call home and the opportunity to realize their full potential.

We Have The Power To End Youth Homelessness and at the heart of IDP Education as staff we take pride in serving our communities to be better.

Every night, over 122,000 Australians experience homelessness. That’s more than the maximum capacity of the great MCG. And alarmingly, a quarter of all these people are between the ages of 12 and 25.

In Victoria, more than 7,600 young people experience homelessness every night.

Young people need more than a safe place to live, they need stability and support to develop life skills, heal from trauma, and to transition to independence. Your support is needed now more than ever.

Homelessness is not a choice. Homelessness doesn't discriminate.

I'm seeking your support by asking you to donate so that I can reach my fundraising target. Every dollar counts!

Together, we have the power to end youth homelessness.
